This Prefelt is a stable surface for needle felting. If you wish to make coasters or batches, you will love this prefelt.
Wet felt it for projects where you need a lot of stiffness and structure. To make sculptures, you can use cut out darts and thinning the cut edges, then by using a basting thread to baste the seams together before felting your object. Want to make tall vessels, this is your pre felt.
Pre felt is commercially made “semi-finished” felt. It is also known as punch felt, as it is made by large machines using felting needles. It is not a coherent, strong finished material. It needs to be fully felted using soap and water to achieve its final form.
Most common uses:
1. add geometric patterns to your felt (just cut out your shape and lay it onto laid-out roving/batt)
2. use as a base to lay out other fibres and felt together
3. use as a base for needle felted art work
4. sew together with running stitch and it will felt together into a larger surface
5. cut out petal shapes, sew together at the base and finish felting to make flowers
6. needle felt colours onto it, then cut out and sew back together
Please note, that pre felt does not have structural integrity without further felting (hence not to be confused with 100% wool felt sheets)
SOME MORE IDEAS FOR YOUR USE OF PRE-FELT:
• For soft edges, tear it
• For defined edges, cut it
• Cut out shapes to lay on top of laid out roving
• For nuno felting precise shapes onto your base fabric
• Use it as a base layer when making garments
• Baste pieces together for a larger felt
• For depth of colour, layer different colours of prefelt and they felt together
• Mix it up with roving – lay roving on top, connect cut-out pieces with bits of roving, lay pre-felt shapes onto your laid out roving.
• Use as a base for needle felting – you might want to double it up for a very sturdy background, or wetfelt a collage of pre-felt, then needle on top
• Use for Upwolfing
• Add extra layers where you need your felt to be thicker – while saving time
• Can be over-dyed (light colours)
